“Nezavisimost” Square
This is the main square of Varna and the historical heart of the city since the Liberation in 1878. Nowadays it is where the building of the Drama Theatre „Stoyan Bachvarov“ is located The Singing Fountain is located on “Nezavisimost” square as well.
The Clock Tower
The idea to build an impressive city clock tower was accomplished in 1888. That clock tower was also used by firemen as their watchtower, since high buildings were still rare and from top of it they could watch over the entire city. The 130 year-old clock still shows the time accurately.
The Fountain on Nezavisimost square
One of the most popular attractions of the sea capital of Bulgaria is the fountain located on Independence (Nezavisimost) square of the city. Its impressive water jet reaches a height of 41m which makes it the tallest fountain in Bulgaria. The incredible show, which is created by more than 2,000 color combinations with spectacular water jets, is something that is definitely worth seeing. With 400 LED lights and 52 water pumps, this fountain leaves a lasting impression on young and old. The fountain has a day, night and intermediate program without melodies.
Main Pedestrian Zone
In order the cultural- historical attractions to be more attractive and accessible a complete reconstruction and modernisation of the main pedestrian zone in Varna has been done in the past few years. This zone includes the area between the “Nezavisimost” Square and the entrance of the Sea Garden, all along “Knyaz Boris I” blvd. Of course, the pedestrian zone remains an area where pedestrians can walk and stroll undisturbed. They always have priority. The Varna pedestrian zone is located in the historic old town. Here, between the cathedral and the entrance of the Sea Garden, many shops offer the latest chic and the coolest clothes. Hungry after shopping? In the city center there are many restaurants offering international and local cuisine.
Dolphinarium
Festa Dolphinarium is the only attraction of its kind in Bulgaria. It is situated amidst the greenery of the Seaside Garden of Varna and offers a wonderful view over the sea. The Zoo
One of the most beautiful places in Varna. Visitors can observe many animals and birds in in their natural environment. The zoo disposes 72 different kinds of animals and birds, among which are ostrich, panther, llamas, camel, lions, tiger, pink pelican, peacock, etc. The Zoo is created a good water base for water birds among rich verdure. The visitors can watch the natural behavior of birds, while they float or plunge into the three cascade lakes. Aquarium
The aquarium is located in the Sea Garden. Hundreds of species of fishes including mollusks, actinides, crabs and periwinkles are featured in the aquarium. Children are especially attracted to the huge variety of exotic fish that they had never ever seen before. The performances of the “Aladzha Monastery Legends” audio-visual show you can see from 01. June – 30. September. Recreational and Entertainment Zone at the Port of Varna
In 2016 a new “Recreational and Entertainment Zone at the Port of Varna” with area of 2.7 ha was set apart. This area has been socialised and has been turned into an attractive pedestrian alley with free access for all the residents and visitors of the city. Varna City Art Gallery “Boris Georgiev”
The City Art Gallery has been founded in 1944. In its current unique building in a neo-Gothic style it’s housed since 1988. Until then the use of the building was for the former secondary school of boys. The Sea garden
Nowadays the Marine Gardens form an imposing park where you can visit the Natural Science Museum, the Naval Museum, the Copernicus Astronomy Complex planetarium, the first in the country, the zoo and the Terrarium. Here one can find the only Dolphinarium and Aquarium in the country. There are also a swimming pool, tennis court, an open-air theater and a children’s complex with a lot of amusements: water wheels, slide, archery, trampoline. Along the alley, which runs parallel to the coastline, there are a number of small cafes and restaurants, offering seafood specialties as well as attractive discos.
